Our hotelShowing the 2 bedrooms of mini-suiteThe hotel is family owned and run, has excellent facilities and is furnished to a higher than average standard with very spacious bedrooms. There is a friendly informal atmosphere and most of the staff speak sufficient English to chat and help guests with their wants.

For friends who would like to share, the rooms are ideal in that many are in fact mini-suites with 2 linked bedrooms sharing 1 bathroom accessed via the master bedroom. Singles who do not wish to pay a single supplement can take advantage of this room plan by telling us they do not mind sharing with another same sex, group member.

The January sun can still warm up nicelyThe Meals.

Ample buffet breakfasts set you up for the day's exercise and dinner with included wine will relax you afterwards.

At lunch time we will be provided with a picnic or a bar lunch. In some bars this consists of simple, surprise tapas in others a "menu" or set dish of the day. Spanish lunch time starts is normally 2pm but en-route snacks will be provided by your leader.

Dinner is a set meal with vegetarian options giving a good variety of Alpujarran dishes during the week. According to the Spanish timetable the earliest time for dinner is 8.30pm.

On New years eve a special multi-course banquet with live entertainment and dancing, will give us all a chance to welcome the coming year.

The itinerary gives a deep insight to the region and total care and support to participants from touch down to take off. You wont need to think, plan, or spend; just enjoy.

The walks will be varied to suit the mood of the group, but as a general aim we make the walks relaxed and enjoyable for all.  The aim is to explore the culture, past and present and enjoy the hills and valleys at the same time.  Some sections might be demanding, but we control the pace and allow plenty of time, so the walks are achievable by all but the very un-fit.

Daylight is limited at this time of year and Spanish lunches can be long, so on days when we eat in a bar there is likely to be minimal walking in the afternoon.

Winter walking implies a bit of risk with the weather but all the pictures on this page were taken during the same week during our 2009 holiday.

Near Trevelez - negotiating a waterfall caused by rapid thaw.

Based in La Tahá de Pitres, one of the best places to walk and discover the spectacular gorge of the Rio Trevélez we can walk from the hotel door and wander the alleys of the many picturesque villages set on the hillside. We are also near enough to the other main centres to take a short bus ride and make day excursions walking in the other valleys of the Alpujarra.

“Don’t want to walk everyday"?  Well there are no rules, the hotel provides a pleasant environment to rest and relax and taxis are available if you want to get off to explore on your own.”

The only pocket money you will need would be for personal bar expenses and other purchases. The hotel will accept credit cards and ATM's are to be found in most of the villages we visit.

The week's itinerary

Start Date - 26th December. Other dates can be negotiated with us.

Arrival On day 1 You will be met personally by your guide for the week, at Malaga airport.

When arranging your flights, try to plan an arrival between 10.00 and 12.00 in order to coincide with other group arrivals. See advice about flights.

Some flight suggestions are

The transfer to the hotel in Mecina take 3hrs or less and is planned to take lunch at beach restaurant to break the journey. We should arrive at the hotel in time to settle in take a fino and dine later at about 8.30PM.

Dinner will be taken with your guide who will explain the plan for the week, and we will all start to get acquainted.

On days 2 to 7.

Breakfast. The general plan for each day will be to enjoy the ample buffet breakfast in a leisurely way, before leaving the hotel at about 10am.

Walk. We will explore this beautiful patch of country and its fascinating villages, walking up to 15km each day, with lunch along the way.

lunch. Whenever feasible lunch will be taken in a local bar giving more opportunity to explore local delicacies and wines.   On some days a varied picnic will be provided. (sorry, no soggy cheese and tomato sandwiches).

We plan to return to the hotel each day at about 5pm.

Dinner in the hotel. 7, 3-course dinners with house wine included, are provided at the hotel. Vegetarian options are provided.

Christmas Eve is when most Spaniards have a special dinner in their homes and most restaurants will be closed. The eve is referred to as "Noche Buena". Although you won't be "at home" we will make sure you have a special celebratory dinner tonight instead of your traditional midday Christmas lunch.

New years eve Dinner There will be about 40 guests enjoying a traditionally indulgent "Noche Vieja" dinner with live music and a dance area set aside in the restaurant.  In Spanish this "eve" is referred to as "The old night". Wines and Cava are included tonight.

New Years day. A walk is planned, but will perhaps start later and be taken very steadily.

Day 8, Departure.

From the Hotel we allow 3 hours to drive to Málaga.  A flight departing at 12.30 would be the earliest practicable.  We leave after a quick coffee and minimal breakfast at 07.30 (or later hopefully) depending on the earliest flight we have to catch.

Ideally you will all get flights with departure times between 12.00 and 14.00. If you get a later departure it may mean that you have an unnecessarily long wait at the airport.

Some flight suggestions are

Lunch is not included today but there are all the usual facilities in the airport.
