A journey to provide an insight into Spains culture, past and present and to show the beauty of its cities and countryside.
During your journey, you could visit up to 4 of the major city venues of Andalucía, and spend 3 or 4 days walking in the Natural Park near each city you visit.
Various 5-day units can be selected to combine into a 5, 10, 15 or 20 day trip.
 The holiday is self-led with all necessary information provided.
You will use public transport or choose to hire a car.
Buses and trains in Spain are comfortable, and cheap. We provide all the necessary information.

For each Natural park you visit, we provide all necessary walking notes and maps for a variety of walks. The walking is graded moderate in difficulty, except unit 3 which is classed as easy. You could choose to have a guide for the walking which saves you the chore of route finding.
In the Alpujarra (unit 1) and Subbetica (unit 4) you stay in 1 village and take circular walks, in the other areas the walk moves on from village to village and your luggage is moved for you.

Granada and La Alpujarra make a fascinating combination. Granada is the European City most recently controlled by the Arabic inhabitants of Spain and when they were finally negotiated out of the city, the Alpujarra became The Moslem 'homeland'...... but not for long. Granada has a spectacular architectural legacy from that 15C period and many earlier remains. The 16C brought new rulers and new culture that gave the city its renaissance.
Granada has direct air links with the UK (Ryanair) and good direct bus/rail links with other Andalucian cities. |
2nights Granada city.
For Granada city , we provide you with details of 3 city walks and information about how to visit the city in general. With 2 nights in the city, and the information we provide you have time to get a feel for the city as well as visiting the famous Alhambra palace. Tickets included.
Your ***hotel is within 15 minutes walk of the Alhambra Palace and centrally placed for walking to the other historic parts of the city as well as the modern centre.
The Sierra Nevada looms over Granada and its south face forms La Alpujarra. On the 3rd day of this unit you will take the bus to the Alpujarra village of Capileira.The journey takes about 2 hours, as the bus winds around difficult mountain roads. There is plenty to see on the way as you arrive in this spectacular region of deep gorges, high hills well watered by the melting snows above.
 3 nights in Capileira
Your ***hotel has good facilities a pleasant environment, with a pool surrounded by gardens and terraces.
The terrain is mountainous and the walks graded moderate/difficult but they vary greatly in altitude and distance, giving walks for all seasons and capabilities.
You will be provided with ample details of circular walks of distances between 3 and 23kms.
You may like to ask for an extended stay here as the walking is varied and plentiful.
Capileira and nearby villages are well supplied with craft shops, varied restaurants, an exhibition centre and museums.
At the end of this unit the best onward route is back to Granada and then to Cordoba by bus or Ronda by train. |
 Unit 2- Ronda and the Sierra de Grazalema . |
Ronda is built across a dramatic gorge and crossed by a series of bridges from distinct ages, from Roman onwards. The Grazalema Park, one of the most important botanical areas in Spain, having more than 1500 species including the endangered Pinsapo fir. On the Europe- Africa bird migratory route, it is an area of abundant, changing bird life. Weathered limestone has created dramatic rock formations and soft green valleys provide the setting for 11 of the famous white villages of Andalucia. The area has great underground water reserves which feed springs and rivulets, keeping the area green when other areas of Andalucia are parched. |
1 night in Ronda town with information to enable you to find the interesting sites without wasting time. You stay in a Medieval Merchant House now converted into a ***hotel.
From Ronda you walk directly into the Sierra de Grazalema.
4 nights in different white villages of the Grazalema park.
We provide a moving on walk from Ronda, through the villages of Montejaque, Grazalema, Villaluenga and Cortes de la Frontera, staying in a variety of tried and tested accommodation.
Your luggage will be moved on for you.
At the end of the walk a transfer is included to the local station enabling onward travel via Ronda or Granada. |
unit 3 - Seville and the Sierra de Aracena |
Seville, the capital of Andalucia past and present has architectural interest ancient and modern and the Sierra de Aracena is a green rolling area of Andalucia between Seville and the Portuguese border. An area of Oak forests and abundant villages linked by gentle paths and tracks.
It is the area to choose if you prefer your walking to be easy rather than strenuous.
Seville has an international airport, with direct flights to Dublin, Liverpool Heathrow, and Stansted and also has high speed train links with Madrid. |
1 night in Seville city in an air conditioned hotel 200metres from the cathedral.
On day 2 after exploring the city a little more a local bus will take you to the village of Aracena, the journey takes 90 minutes.
4 nights in the Sierra de Aracena.
Arriving in the village of Aracena you will be met and provided with all the information and walking notes. The walking is quite easy in this area.
The normal walking route (depending on hotel availability) is a 3-day circular Aracena (H***)-Galaroza (H**)- Alajar (H*)-Aracena.
Your luggage will be moved each day for you.
You are likely to return to Seville for onward travel. |
 Unit 4 -Córdoba and the Subbetica. |
Córdoba retains the feeling of importance it had in the early middle ages when it was the centre of the Islamic world, and the world centre of science and learning. La Mezquita encapsulates 700 years of history while the city in general provides opportunities for exploring tapas bars, restaurants, galleries and museums. The Sierra de la Subbética is about an hour's drive from Cordoba city and is a pleasure to walk in. A mixture of stony paths which are quite difficult underfoot, green swards and oak-woods over a limestone terrain.
Cordoba has direct bus links with all major cities and high speed train links with Seville and Madrid. We will supply the details when we know your venues. |
2 nights in Cordoba city.
In Cordoba you will spend two nights in a **Hotel in the same square as the Mezquita and will have 24 hours or more to visit and explore. Our information will give ideas about what you might like to visit and where you can relax.
On day 3 you would take the local bus from Cordoba to Zuheros a journey of about 90 minutes.
3 nights in Zuheros – Sierra de La Subbetica.
On the 3rd day your transport will take you to Zuheros, pictured here. Our representative will meet you, introduce you to the hotel, brief you on the available walks and provide the notes to guide you.
The ** hotel in the centre of the village, is family run, very friendly and has a justly earned reputation for good food. There is a choice of walks available, from 3 to 20kms in length and you spend 3 nights here.
On day 6 of this unit you would take the local bus to Cordoba for onward travel. |
