Mecina in the area known as La Taha, in the spectacular gorge of the Rio Trevélez is a lovely area to walk from, we can walk from the hotel door and wander the alleys of the many picturesque villages set on the hillside. The 6 guided walks will be varied to suit the mood of the group, but as a general aim we make the walks relaxed and enjoyable for all as we explore the culture, past and present and enjoy the hills and valleys.

Based La Tahá de Pitres, one of the best places to walk and discover the spectacular gorge of the Rio Trevélez we can walk from the hotel door and wander the alleys of the many picturesque villages set on the hillside. We are also near enough to the other main centres to take a short bus ride and make day excursions walking in the other valleys of the Alpujarra.

Winter walking implies a bit of risk with the weather but all the pictures on this page were taken during the same week during our 2009 holiday. Our overall impression from a mere 18 years of experience is that mid-winter brings clear air and winter sunshine, but there have been wet winters like that of 2009/10.

“Don’t want to walk everyday"? Well there are no rules, the hotel provides a pleasant environment to rest and relax and taxis are available if you want to get off to explore on your own.

The Location

andbase

Based in La Tahá de Pitres, one of the best places within the alpujarra to walk and discover the spectacular gorge of the Rio Trevélez. We can walk from the hotel door and wander the alleys of the many picturesque villages set on the hillside and are also near enough to the other main centres to take a short bus ride and make day excursions walking in the other valleys of the Alpujarra.

Terrain and the walking

The terrain is mountainous, but the routes being based on the ancient mule trails, are reasonably graded to make the hiking relaxed for the averagely fit person. The walks will be varied to suit the mood of the group, but the general aim is to explore the culture, past and present and enjoy the hills and valleys at the same time. Some sections might be demanding, but we control the pace and allow plenty of time, so the walks are enjoyable by all.

You should be prepared for some more demanding steep sections both uphill and downhill but these rarely last more than 30 minutes. We will walk on a mixture of forest roads and paths, some of which are rough, stony and difficult underfoot. Some stretches are wet underfoot. All walks will remain below the snow-line.

Leaving the hotel each day at about 10am and returning at about 5pm, we will explore this beautiful patch of country and its fascinating villages, walking up to 15km each day, with lunch along the way.

Whenever feasible lunch will be taken in a local bar giving more opportunity to explore local delicacies and wines. Spanish lunches tend to be a bit on the lengthy side and so it may be that not much walking gets done after lunch. On new years day after the special dinner we expect to be even more relaxed.
