If forced to choose a "best time to visit" then we would choose April and May. Spring is always an optimistic time and in the mountains perhaps more so when nature bursts through the barely thawed soil with great gusto and the minimum of delay.

An common sight in the alpujarra, and one that never tires, is of the era, usually a perfect viewpoint.

At this time the growth on the terraces makes living off the land look easy but many villages are diminutive today because in the past it proved to be anything but.

This month is THE flowery month. What we see here is what landscapers and gardeners always fail to match.

A butterfly Orchid living dangerously by the side of the well-trodden GR7.

A crocus flowers immediately it is free of snow

The attractive Antyllis cushion should not be sat on.

The high mountain areas become a little more accessible but are still defended by torrents of melt water that defy crossing.

Lower in the valleys things can be taken easier and with the luxury of bridges.

Wonderfully engineered acequias are surprisingly ancient but still bring water to the villages for consumption and irrigation.

The paths themselves are a joy at any season but dressed in Spring green they add another dimension to their charm.

Colour is everywhere

The rock, the soil, the sky and the mountain
